2003 EXHIBITION SERIES: GAME #2 REVIEW

Team Hao's Heroes 12 vs. Team MDHL 4
MDHL gets a lesson in tough hockey…

Friday, March 28, 2003

The second exhibition game in as many weeks for Team MDHL as they came off a dramatic win and were now facing another tough task in Team Hao's Heroes. This was the rematch from last year's deadlock with Team MDHL tying the game on a last second goal thanks to a 2 on 0 by Chang and Archibald. Fast forwarding to this night, the MDHL knew they would be in for another battle. And what a battle it was as Hao's Heroes took it to Team MDHL in a chippy affair like none seen before our free-flowing league of Asian-Euro-non-touch-wannabes.

Things started out dim in the dressing room as MDHL all-star Sean "star player turned ref" Oye was a late scratch due to injury and donned the stripes instead. Allen "his loss is my gain baby" Leung instead got the call and had a good test in store for his re-habbed shoulder. The game started out with the usual intensity of three rolling lines, but soon took a different complexion as MDHL Chris "don't tatoo my back please" Archibald was mugged in front of the opposing net by two players with gloved punches exchanged. (Punches? What the?! Where's the ref when you need 'em?)

Not a great night for world peace and overall fun as Hao's Heroes dominated the scoresheet and pummelled the 'Dogs with wave after wave of offensive skill and playmaking. Meanwhile, the odd shoulder, rub out, and screams of "you bitch" echoed through the night. Down 5-0, Team MDHL had a brief spark on a two goal outburst, one on a backhander by C Jason "I think Nazzy can rifle it 20 times better, but thanks for the comparison" Lai and Allen "promotion off of the D was the best call of the night" Leung on a nice solo effort. Otherwise, the highlights went to Hao's Heroes and their offensive line with their goalie stopping short of reading a novel in his spare time. Both teams did exchange power plays after Ref Oye figured out how to skate the length of the ice without getting in players' way and actually using the whistle! As the night would have it... Hao's Heroes converted on their chance while Team MDHL came up dry.

Not a great night for the 'Dogs and a lesson at the scoresheet to boot as MDHL captain Stan "at least I don't have to hear about this at work" Quan takes the team loss, while Hao "I'm the better Quan tonight" Quan leads his team to victory.

Game's 3 Stars:

3. Allen Leung... good effort for the first game back from many weeks of IR.
2. Chris Archibald... a constant threat but took a physical toll from the enemy all night long.
1. Hao's Forwards... yes, all three freaking lines did the damage and ran up the score pretty good.
