2003 SPRING SERIES: GAME #1 REVIEW

Team Dark 11 vs. Team White 6
Moving to a new venue and Team White opens the season with a win…

Friday, April 4, 2003

And so the 2003 spring edition of the MDHL kicked off with a location move to Richmond Ice for the season's duration. With new teams and new recruits, both sides were up to the task with a high energy game on the virtual Olympic-sized rink compared to the previous venue at Trout Lake. This series featured new teams put together by last series' captains Anthony "I'll be Burke you be Clarke" Chang and Sean "No, you be Clarke, I'll be Burke" Oye with the competitive outcome yet to be known. New rookies joining the MDHL this time around include Tom "me 'n Jay are co-volleyball and hockey cross- trainers" Jong and Travis "got me ten weeks to get into game shape" Wong. Gon "I'm playing with a stick that has a ROLL of tape as butt-end" Yip also returns to action after a mid-series layoff.

Both sides came out buzzing with good action by both teams, while Team Dark were led by their new, first-time captain in Kenny "so what does a captain do anyways?" Chiu. The usual free-flowing clean brand of MDHL hockey ensued with both sides exchanging goals. Sub F Ray "I was a single man last time I played here" Chow made a rare appearance for Team White and hasn't lost a step dazzling both side with his skilled playmaking. Admist the heated action, White D Sherman "face shields are my new best friend" takes a deflected shot off the noggin for the second time in as many series. Meanwhile, strangely enough, perennial MVP, Team Dark's Sean "my sore shoulder is no excuse" Oye coughed up the puck in his zone on more than a few occasions at least more than we are used to seeing in an entire season mind you. Though the play was close for most of the game, newbie sub-in goalie Steve "finally get my debut in this gig" Brown turned in a solid performance in the latter stages to preserve a win while Team White's offense kept things rolling.

MDHL 3 Stars:
3. Travis Wong... league debut with a solid outing on the blueline.
2. Ray Chow... mini-reunion of sorts and still got the great moves.
1. Steve Brown... first appearance, and a solid one at that getting the win between the pipes.
