Western Conference 12 vs. Eastern Conference 8 Allen bags six en route to a West win… Friday, October 18, 2002
Another entertaining affair, albeit not as close in the outcome this time
around. Both teams had their run-n-gun offense going, well, maybe with the
exception of the East's Chan-Nguyen-Quan lunch bucket line, but hey, that
makes for a great menu item in some 3rd world country I bet.
Otherwise, it
was a tight game in the early stages, and the West debuted another sub in
the born-again-rookie drop-in, Dave Cheung, straight from the MDHL alumni
and two years removed from skating. Too bad Dave's enthusiasm cost the West
a too-many-men penalty with the East capitalizing on the ensuing power play.
The West did get their own power play opportunity when Rich Chang lost his
Lady Byng votes in one instance on an errant high stick but G Smokey stood
his ground. West superstar Sean Oye was a late move to the forward line
citing undisclosed injuries, but it didn't reflect his play setting up
linemate Allen Leung for most of his six goal barrage. With offense like
that, it snuffed all hope of the East catching up at the pivoting 8-7 mark
in the latter stages of the game.
That however, didn't stop East winger
Simon Wong from scoring to impress the babes in the stands, but he just
needs a more flamboyant goal celebration to cap things off. (How about
pulling out a Sharpie and signing the puck?) And in a rarer play, did
anyone notice the West's captain score that goal from behind the goal line?
The 'ol bank-of-the-bum play was all planned, so he claims.
As such, the
East's line change up strategy didn't pay dividends this time around
although D Tom Ng was quietly solid all night long while the West fielded a
rather predictable roster and welcomed back assistant captain, Chris
Archibald, who started his first game back from injury. What will next game
have in store?
MDHL 3 Stars:
3. Gon Yip... two goal outburst and made the goalpost (and his neck) pay in
the process.
2. Anthony Chang... continues to impress with his rooftop backhand dekes.
1. Allen Leung... six goals to lead the MDHL goal scoring race. |
