Coronavirus Can't Stop Us Friday, March 27, 2020
As the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic recently moved all-in on the world, the MDPL countered with a savvy re-raise... into cyberspace, landing directly into a private room at Poker Stars for a new chapter of league play mid-season. It took about a week of discussion, tweaking and testing (with special thanks to Simon Wong, Vince Fung, and a few tester peeps for rallying around this) and alas, our maiden virtual voyage took flight with a modest group of usual suspects. As expected, there were some logistical blips to work through (i.e. late arrivals, room joining issues, adequate chip stacks, home technology challenges, etc.) but we finally got rolling and managed to reel off two mini-games with video/audio conferencing (aka friendly banter and a few chirpy barbs too).
While the online game structure was not the usual we have come to expect, it was still poker after all and bode well for both Gerard Tang and Quincy Ko, winning their matches, with the latter extending his season lead on the pack... so congrats to him and all the ITM finishers tonight.
After about 2+ hours of play, it was all said and done, and your host did not have to worry about feeding the savages or dealing with any messy cleanup afterwards either, so virtual poker has its advantages. Booyah. Twas a new experience for some, and usual stuff for others, but overall, a fun way to spend a self-isolation type of an evening with the familar lads of the MDPL. Looking forward to future events and opening up another table or two... now turn those poker sounds off gents!
