2005 WINTER SERIES: GAME SUMMARIES (2ND HALF)

Game #10: Team Rocks 10 vs. Team Scissors 5
Friday, March 18, 2005

And the series goes into a deciding shootout yet again… not! What could've been yet another exciting end to a series fizzled out as Team Rocks seals the win and the series… perhaps doomed from the get go as Team Scissors fielded three subs in their lineup putting team chemistry in doubt while Team Rocks fielded their permanent roster throughout… while the game started as though it would be close with Team Scissors actually having an early lead with some hard work up front… meanwhile Team Rocks appeared to sputter out of the gate as usual sniper Allen Leung was sidelined with a case of wrong skate insoles (but thankfully, his trainer Mel made the quick dash home and back to save him)… otherwise, a turning point may have been a non-call on what should have been a disallowed Rocks goal by Derek Lowe (breaking the "end to end rush" rule) was held in silence by both team's captains (go figger)... in any event Team Rocks rolled on relentlessly and poured on the offense while sub goalie Samson Chow enjoyed a win... not a great showing for Aaron Oye's father in the stands watching his son play for the first time in many a year, but hey, them's the breaks... and the MDHL wishes a fond farewell to departing regulars: Kenny Chiu, Simon Wong, Michael Nguyen, Rich Chang, Michel Thibaudeau, Norman Chan, and Dom Kwong... see the rest of you in our new venue (RIC) for spring!

Game #9: Team Rocks 6 vs. Team Scissors 5... Another intense battle.... and Team Rocks pulls out another close victory to clinch that prized 5th win of the series... both teams battled hard with only one sub in the game (alumni Sean Oye in for stalwart Ron Pong)... Team Scissors tinkered with their pre-game lineup putting Dom Kwong on D and his "enthusiasm" (read: elbows up) to defend accounted for a few ruffled feathers and drew a penalty to boot... in fact, Team Rocks fielded the game's only two penalties of the night but were able to work through them in a close score throughout... finally Rocks captain Anthony Chang took advantage of a defensive miscommunication and went in cold on goalie Norm Chan to get the game winner... and the night was sealed in the final 40 seconds when Jason Lai had a late breakaway chance on a sweet pass from hard working Mike Nguyen but super sub Sean Oye's super speed caught him before getting a shot away... too bad the ensuing full-speed wipeout results in a double-fracture to Jason's elbow... emergency rooms and x-rays are always a great way to cap the weekend... doctor's prognosis... up to 3 months! Ack. And so Team Scissors looks to tie things up and send it to shootout in the final game of the series, stay tuned! Meanwhile, MDHL bids a fond farewell to our blue-chip goalie, Michel Thibaudeau who has finished his tour of duty and will not return for the next series. Best wishes, Mike!

Game #8: Team Rocks 11 vs. Team Scissors 9... Tie series! Team Rocks storm back in another intense but also heated game as both teams duked it out... the game featured the MDHL rookie goalie debut of Jay Estoque getting the win for Team Rocks while alumni subs Sean Oye and Chris Archibald also filled out the squad... that sub threesome had an impact in helping their team gain the lead after falling behind in the early stages... a few key giveaways by Team Scissors in their own end didn't help matters while captain Kenny Chiu was involved all night long... accepting an own-penalty-call on a borderline boarding infraction... and also blew a gasket on a few occasions disputing non-calls and firing up his troops... didn't work though. While his team clawed back into contention on some key goals by Michael Nguyen and Simon Wong, it started to look destined for another OT game down the stretch but more scorekeeping confusion between the captains took away some momentum... ultimately Team Scissors were forced to pull their goalie Michel Thibaudeau in the dying seconds for the extra man, but ended up surrendering the empty netter instead... in other news, Dom Kwong finally returns to action after missing many a game being a new parent, while our favourite scorekeeper Mel McLeod is missing from the sidelines yet again!

Game #7: Team Scissors 10 vs. Team Rocks 9 (OT)... Enter OT action on this night as both teams did battle in another true nail biter... it appeared with opening lineups that Team Scissors would easily have their way fielding both Oye brothers via sub duty while Team Rocks were missing Allen Leung AWOL for reasons unknown... but Team Rocks were up to the task as brothers Chang turned in stellar efforts as Anthony led his team with the usual money-in-the-bank breakaway efforts (for five goals no less) while Albert delivered clutch plays including a steal from his blueline in to light the lamp as well as a solo game tying effort in the dying seconds... but amidst the intense back-and-forth momentum swings, it was young Aaron Oye playing the hero of heroes as his ability to finish at the net resulted in crucial goals including a key steal off Derek Lowe's failed (ringette-like) attempt out of his own zone as well as the coveted game winner in OT with a pass from captain Kenny Chiu and a shot that fluttered in high off goalie Michel Thibaudeau (only getting a piece of the original shot)... goalie Norm Chan rides a hot streak with his third consecutive win and earns the night off next week in favour of watching Steve Nash and the NBA in Phoenix... in other news, our beloved scorekeeper Melodie McLeod was absent for the second straight week... time to start the petition, boys...

Game #6: Team Rocks 10 vs. Team Scissors 7... Team Rocks ties the series bolstered by the mid-series equalization trade and a pre-game engineered mercy trade of subs as Fraser Stampvincent switches to a Rocks jersey at the last minute... which turned into a game breaker as his blazing speed and scoring touch burns Team Scissors... also helping the effort on the winning sides were rare but clutch goals from Terry Wong and Stan Quan, along with a usual bagful of goals by captain Anthony Chang, his Team Rocks pull away in the later stages of the game... in light of a fast start by Team Scissors without captain Kenny Chiu but a more-than-capable super-sub Sean Oye in his place... and even with a dream-like 3-goals-in-first-3-shifts effort by Jason Lai playing with the sub return of Chris Archibald, Team Scissors couldn't hold the momentum as G Norm Chan settled into a groove and took the win from his counterpart Michel Thibaudeau at the other end... in any event, both newly traded players (Travis Wong and Sherman Woo) performed in fine fashion for their new squads and both vow more revenge in the coming weeks...
