During this crazy Covid summer, pickleball has risen as a new activity in the Mad Dogs arsenal. So the last weekend in August made way for the first-ever MDPBL tournament put on by your trusty co-organizers, Dharmesh and Jason. A (mostly) noob crew was in the mix, all vying for Mad Dogs pickleball supremacy with 7 randomized teams battling in round-robin action, trying to be one of 4 worthy teams to advance to the knockout stages.
The top seeded team of Marisa/Willy (meeting for the first time together) gelled instantly and steamrolled their way to a perfect 6-0 record in the round-robin, while another newly aquainted tandem of Ray/Georgina managed to squeak into the knockout stage thanks to the head-to-head record tiebreaker against the two other teams with identical (2-4) records. Meanwhile, Mad Dogs veterans Calvin/Dharmesh (5-1) and Carlos/Walt (4-2) took the #2 and #3 seeds respectively (and handily) to round out the final four.
As the afternoon clouds formed and the rain was threatening, our championship round matches all completed in time with the designated 'bad boy' team of Carlos/Walt stunning the field as the third seed, rallying to take the title... despite instances of absenteeism, tardiness, illegal substitutions and controversial foot faults, all while conducting a sideline black market deal in the process. Quite the rap sheet for one afternoon, yet they played the role of the heels perfectly en route to sweet, sweet victory!
Congrats to all the participating teams in our inaugural event and special thanks to Dharmesh for taking up a co-organzing role to help make it possible. See you all back on the courts sooner or later, and everyone now has ample time to practice for next year?
