Western Conference 14 vs. Eastern Conference 11 Last game of 2002 goes to the West… Friday, December 20, 2002
And so the last game of the series and of the 2002 year ring out with the East looking for some pride and payback after losing the overall series. Alas 'twas not to be on this starry December night as the West pulled out another hard fought victory.
The game started out close in the early going, although the East were a man down with their assistant captain Jason Lai out at a Christmas dinner party. "Beer and 5 lbs of food is no way to warmup for a game" he confessed. That, along with getting locked out of the rink at his arrival didn't bode well. Thanks to Tom "are there thugs outside waiting to beat me up?" Ng for opening the damn doors to let him in.
And so with a 3-2 lead, the East slowly let the game slip away with the West's too many unanswered goals and soon it was 12-6 for the West. West sniper F Allen Leung led all shooters with a monster eight goal game to ring out his stellar year, while the East featured the return of ex-MDHL (now with MDHL Europe chapter) Jeff Yu. Unfortunately for the East, Jeff was just happy to back on Canadian soil (or ice) and left his timing and finish somewhere back in Germany. Rumour has it he didn't play a minute of hockey since he left Canada and his equipment was in storage only a few hours earlier.
And so the West took it, backed by a strong outing from West G Samson Chow, even against a "phantom goal" that was scored by East captain Anthony Chang (called in about 3 minutes after the fact) and the game's only penalty by West F Sean "I'm no bully, I'm Lady Byng material" Oye. Thanks to everyone for a successful 2002 MDHL campaign... see y'all in the new year!
MDHL 3 Stars:
3. Albert Chang... stellar work on D, both defensively and offensively.
2. Samson Chow... solid in net and gets a win against his rival nemesis (Smokey).
1. Allen Leung... eight dingers to tie the season's highest goal output. |
