WINTER '03 SERIES: GAME #1 REVIEW

Team White 9 vs. Team Dark 6
Dark takes the loss along with losing their top sniper!

Friday, January 3, 2003

Happy 2003 new year to the MDHL and all its stellar players. And only three days into the new year, the 'dogs were back at it with newly elected captains Sean Oye and Albert Chang heading up the Dark Team while Anthony Chang and Jason Lai lead Team White. Still in the holiday mode, no less than four players were missing from the lineup with subs on the ready including a welcome appearance by MDHL alumni Ron Pong, Carson Koo, Jeff Ohashi and now-a-sub Simon Wong. Meanwhile Dark Team's Jackson Chiu was AWOL from the lineup, perhaps still drunk (or giddy) with egg nog, leaving his team one short on the bench.

This time around the MDHL welcomed long-time-subs-and-now-rookie-regulars Basse "white and undefeated, two rarities around here" Clement and Tyson "looking to make my mark in this town" Carvell making their debuts on Team White. Clement continues to impress with his play and astrological karma as he extends his personal win streak to seven games as Team White cruised to victory when the dust had settled.

Both teams were running on high octane in the early going and the play was surprisingly spirited and close considering the combined 200lbs of turkey eaten by the players over the holidays. The TSN turning point did eventually come on a "Chang calls out Chang" penalty shot against Albert (and his unintentional stick toss) and his Dark Team, coincidentally negating their goal just moments afterward. While Skate missed the ensuing penalty shot against Samson "penalty shot? bring it on baby" Chow, it did take the wind out of sails of Team Dark and the were unable to answer the subsequent offense from Team White.

With the pace of the game slowing (the turkey must've settled by this point), and the Dark Team trailing far behind they dug an even deeper hole when their top sniper Allen "lookin to improve upon my eight dingers from last game" Leung injures his shoulder in front of the White Team net and had to be carried off. A foregone conclusion by that point, but the early prognosis sees Leung out for the season. Stay tuned for the latest medical and roster updates.

MDHL 3 Stars:

3. Tom Ng... another stellar D performance.
2. Basse Clement... the lucky charm of the MDHL.
1. Mike Smith... solid between the pipes and gets the win.
